Originally from a textile background, Alison Johnson now paints predominatley in oils from her studio in Irvine, Ayrshire, on the south west coast of Scotland. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee in 1996 where she specialised in tapestry weaving. She has been working as an artist ever since producing paintings, prints and textiles in addition to running her own art classes in various schools and centres around Ayrshire, including her own studio. She has shown work in various galleries and exhibitions around the UK and France, including the RGI. Her artwork shows a textile influence from her use of patterning and texture.
Alison most recent body of work is inspired by the colours, patterns, and performers of the circus, looking beneath its glamorous and flamboyant surface. She is very fond of using the juggler as a metaphor for today’s hectic society and how we have to juggle various jobs and situations in every day. Her curiosity about relationships and the struggles that couples face together is commented on when she takes the harlequin man and woman out of context, placing them in various fairy tale like settings. There is usually a personal and symbolic story behind each painting.
Alison welcomes visitors to her studio and she is happy to undertake commissions.
