An ancient Japanese belief was that nothing lasts forever, and this simple fact is what made objects so precious. Once broken objects could be brought back to life using a technique known as kintsugi. A reassembled piece then became even more precious. Athlete was inspired by this notion, the human body reaching its physical perfection has a sense of both strength and vulnerability. This sculpture was sculpted in ceramic, fired, broken, chun glazed and then reassembled.

Trevor's appreciation and interest in sculpture developed during the numerous BA art history lectures he attended as a student; which coupled with many years of life drawing has given his sculpture a strong figurative grounding and focus. In time, strong ceramic forms have developed in his work, pieces which are sensitively fired using ancient Japanese raku, smoke or crystalline glaze techniques.
