This is one of a series of paintings concerned with re-configuring the image of the male in art. It seeks to explore the notion of the male equivalent of the female muse. Eastern promise is one of the earliest of these paintings I first did first as a water colour study and later as an oil painting.
Whilst the female nude has been the subject of feminist deconstruction, stereotypical images of men have gone relatively unchallenged. The tradition of the female nude has been to do with male expression and ways of perceiving women. These paintings seek to depict intimate expressions of the male nude and desire from a female perspective.
It shows the upper part of his body and discretely only part of his face because he did not want his individual identity on show. The intimacy of the image isn’t compromised by this omission. Composed of the close up body part it invites the viewer to be drawn in and inhabit the landscape of the body in much the same way as one does in private moments.
