Wrapped Form 1 is the first in a series of abstract glass sculpture. These pieces were inspired by the texture and feel of discarded paper seen blowing along an empty city street, and on reflection becomes about the paper’s relationship to its original form, when once part of a living organism.
This piece, like most of Julie's work, was made using glass casting. Firstly, an intricate single-use mould was constructed; created from a model consisting of waxed cloth carefully wrapped around an elliptical form (hence the name, ‘Wrapped Form’). The original model was then extracted, allowing for the mould to be filled with molten glass and fired in a kiln for several days. Once the firing is complete the mould is broken away from the glass. To finish, the flat surfaces of the piece were hand ground and brought to a high polish.
This piece is made from 'Bullseye Glass' and the colour is ‘Juniper’.
