About Me

Heidi Lichterman studied Landscape Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design, USA, before going on to run nature education programmes, including some on television. She began weaving in 1977, quickly establishing an admirable reputation. Moving to England in 1981 her studio is based near the town of Cambridge.

Heidi is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and was Chairman for two terms. She has been President of the Cambridge Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, and later, Chairman of the Guild. She was also a Member of the former Cambridge Society of Painters and Sculptors, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and is on the Crafts Council Index of Selected Makers. Heidi curated the Society of Designer Crafts Exhibition, Designer Crafts at the Mall, in London for 21 years and retired from that position after the exhibition in 2011.

“I am a textile artist, weaving at two very different scales: I make delicate, fine silk scarves, and I make large-scale wall hangings, some up to 30 feet tall. Both use abstract images, usually inspired by the arrangement of colours and space of a natural scene. My wall hangings are suitable for public spaces, and hang in galleries and corporate buildings around the globe. My silk scarves are wearable works of art. Each is unique and a signed piece.” - Heidi Lichterman
