The two humming birds are gilded in 22ct moon gold leaf and the flowers the birds are feeding from are gilded in copper and gold Dutch metal. All these elements have been worked into, and backed up with black, while the background is gilded and toned with silver leaf and backed with sky blue.

The piece is made up of three layers of glass spaced in a deep frame. The spacing of the glass, particularly when the viewer moves their head a little to look from different angles, adds the impression of suspension of these hovering little birds.
