Huw’s interest in woodwork was first sparked during the early seventies whilst training to become a navigation officer in the merchant navy, a time when he would regularly find himself spending more time in the workshop than revising for his navigational exams. Enamoured with a new found fondest for the art of woodwork, Huw began to look for someone willing to take him on as an apprentice cabinetmaker / antiques restorer, a decision which culminated in him studying under A. J. Hartnett, a restorer, and Michael Borman, an antiques specialist. After working for a number of restoration workshops Huw decided to refocus his efforts into creating his own range of original furnishings, and after studying for a degree in design, opened his own workshop in 1990.
Now, with a wealth of traditional knowledge and experience, Huw creates an eclectic and stunning range of furniture and functional sculptural objects of his own design. All his pieces are made from the finest European and exotic hardwoods, put together using a combination of time honoured construction methods, and some more experimental fabrication techniques. Huw says, “I always felt that having worked with the finest period pieces of furniture from the Regency to Art Deco had given me an eye for proportion and classical form, so important in designing objects with integrity and stature, even though often not having any direct visual connection. However we can never get away from connections from the past, tapping into all the genius of our mentors before us.”
