Donald's latest three larger paintings are grouped under the general theme title ‘Men of Substance’.
In 'The Old Argument'; 'Something in the Air' and 'Cul-de-sac' Donald contrives situations that comment on the merits and failings of the male condition. The paintings all have a ‘North of England’ feel, and make reference to the changes in Northern England society and culture, focusing on how men position themselves in a landscape of changing male values, expectations and aspirations.
'The narratives in my paintings are unfinished, open-ended and always allow space for the viewer’s reading', says Donald, 'They are worked in a slow, careful, figurative manner that I like because I can control what I do and I have time to consider the painting’s formal elements and signified meaning. I have deliberately implied a filmic quality through the broad landscape format.'
This painting comes displayed in a simple ‘floating frame’, painted in Farrow & Ball 'hardwick white'.
