This is one of a series of studies of the male nude concerned with re-configuring the male in art. It seeks to depict intimate expression of masculinity from a female perspective and explores the notion of the male equivalent of the female muse.
The tradition of the female nude has been to do with male expression of desire and how they perceiving women. Whiles male formulations of desire still dominate the culture being desired is held to equate with female desire. However this doesn’t relate to how women see themselves nor how they themselves see or desire men.
The beefcake Chippendales on offer are a feeble vehicle for this. This kind of tawdry spectacle does more to ridicule to feminine eyes than celebrate them and is does service to men.
Because of the long held taboo on women expressing desires, there are few representation what this might look like. Women’s tender feelings may be evoked more by the sleeping image of loved one than a hard bodied buck strutting his stuff. In showing a softer side in ‘Morning Light’ with the luminosity of the early light on his body, this unguarded and vulnerable image seeks an alternative reading of masculinity.
