Having moved to Haworth some 3 years ago Judy Sale has had the wonderful experience of living in 8 different countries and travelling between many more. Her work as a professional artist reflects this nomadic lifestyle in that the paintings she creates are greatly influenced by her travels, thus making her artwork hugely biographical – which may not be entirely obvious to the viewer.
Recently she has diversified from pure Abstraction by using a camera/mobile on her journeys, then incorporating the printed copies in new ways onto canvas. This ‘collage’ method using mixed media allows her the freedom of using all manner of memorabilia to add texture, colour and even the patterns of text as part of the composition in any particular painting.
Judy was born in America but now possesses dual American/British citizenship. She has exhibited and sold her art in countries as far afield as Canada, Cyprus, Germany, UK, France, Ireland, Italy and of course America to name a few. She is today represented in various public and private collections including The Royal Mint in London, and Wiltshire County Council here in the UK. An art degree graduate from Eastern Illinois University so long ago, she could not have known then how far her art would take her – artistically, spiritually and geographically.
In addition to her life’s work as an artist, Judy recently spent several years in a medieval mountain village in northern Italy. There she actively restored important properties of distinction to their former glory, with the intention of selling them as holiday homes. This project was very successful and provided jobs and new opportunities for the local community while preserving the integrity of these previously grand and noble homes.
This diverse work experience has greatly influenced Judy’s way of ‘looking and seeing.’ Incorporating found objects from restoration sites into her art practice, this restorative work also involved local, Italian craftsmen who taught her new skills including ‘builder’s Italian!’
Present work has been inspired by trips to Thailand and Bali - and recently Scotland.
