Since graduating at Glasgow School of Art, Drawing and Painting Department in 1984 Lesley has exhibited extensively both in the UK and abroad. Throughout her career she has been fortunate enough to be the recipient of several travel scholarships and awards including a Leverhulm Research Award. Her main artistic influences include Edward Hopper, Carel Weight and Vilhelm Hammershoi.
Lesley’s works are exhibited in a number of private and public collections, including Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Her paintings cover a wide variety of subjects ranging from figures, domestic interiors, life through windows, city and landscape scenes. Lesley quotes, 'There are naturally recurrent themes in my work as I will always be drawn to people and their surroundings whether this is in Glasgow or Italy'.
Her most recent body of work focused on Venice. 'This city has always intrigued me', lesley explains. 'It’s a place of dreamlike menace, rising out of the water with decaying grandeur, impossibly beautiful and almost surreal. The light and colours attract me, the pale ochre and terracotta pinks of the buildings are reflected in the greens of the canals so different from Glasgow'. In an attempt to gain an insight beyond that of a tourist she was lucky enough to visit with several Venetian residents including the wonderful Fiora Gandolfi. This led to a series of Venetian interiors and portraits of Fiora.
