Philip has been designing and making fine furniture since 1975 and works with a small team at his Oxfordshire studio, producing one-offs and his own range of designs for private and public clients. He is passionate about wood and committed to developing a sustainable approach to furniture design that celebrates wood and contributes to a greater understanding of our environmental responsibilities. He sees craftsmanship as an important medium to heighten our sensitivity and appreciation of ourselves and our relationship with nature. He studied Furniture Design & Technology at Buckinghamshire University and completed a PhD in Sustainable Design at Brunel University in 2007.
Philip's particular focus is the development of designs which explore the rich diversity of local woodlands. His iconic "Pondlife" bench design which uses sweet chestnut thinnings has been acclaimed as "organic and wildly eccentric" by The Independent and as "absolutely beautiful" by Channel 4. It was exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford in 2003.
Philip has won numerous awards and citations and was amongst a select group of designers to be invited to a Buckingham Palace reception in recognition of "excellence in the practice of design". His touring exhibition, “Out of the Woods” (2004-5), “affirmed his status as one of the finest craftsmen in wood in Britain today."BBC Homes & Antiques, 2004
