Charlie Carter is a maker, project manager and lead artist with over twenty years’ experience on creative projects in the public realm. He has made work for streets, schools, hospitals, libraries and churches and worked closely with communities in all of these places to make art that creates atmosphere and sense of place. Furthermore Charlie is more than happy to take on private commissions made to a smaller scale than his usual work, weather this be a piece for your garden or home. In using robust, long lasting materials, his sculptural pieces are intended to be as low maintenance and durable as possible.

Below is a short description for just some of the public pieces of sculpture he has previously worked on. In order of appearance they are (there are two images per piece):

Celestial Microscope:
Made for Portsmouth Grammar School in 2010/11 this sculpture was made using green oak, Douglas fir, cedar, stainless steel, and copper. This piece was commissioned to mark the opening of a new science block and was inspired by the Enlightenment period of empirical research and voyages of discovery. The carbon atom at one end turns the solar system at the other.

Commissioned for the Southampton University Hospital to provide a focal point in a new courtyard created as part of a major extension to the premises. “Koru” was conceived after close collaboration with the landscape architects so that it is echoed and enhanced by forms in the landscape design. It is made from green oak and stainless steel.

On display at Hanwell Fields Estate, Banbury. This piece was conceived as a landmark for the new housing estate of Hanwell Fields. The imagery derives from the fact that there is a community observatory at nearby Hanwell Castle.

"Olfactotem" can be found on Commercial Rd, Portsmouth. It was commissioned as one of five interactive pieces by different artists representing the five senses. Olfactotem represents the sense of smell and was designed to provide opportunities for inter-generational seating and play.

Performance Space:
Designed to be a location for street entertainers to perform and with a series of related satellite areas unified by design, this piece is also found on Commercial Rd, Portsmouth.
