Nick Mackman is a sculptor of one-off or limited edition clay animal sculptures. She has been widely exhibited across both the UK and abroad, and in 2012 was the overall runner-up in the 'Wildlife Artist of the Year' competition. Over the years her animals have found homes with the like of John Cleese, Judi Dench, Chris Packham, David Shepherd and Viscountess Serena Linley.

Most of Nick’s animal sculptures are Raku fired, giving a rich but natural looking crackle glaze. Her aim is to get under the skin of each of the animals she sculpts, giving each piece a personality all of its own - a feat she seems to effortlessly achieve time and time again. Many of her subjects are highly endangered and, in depicting them, she seeks to enlighten us to their beauty, humour and tenderness.

This particular piece was inspired by the many hours Nick spent observing this beautiful and characterful animal on game drives.
