An award-winning designer maker, Tim has been making solid wooden furniture for many years, following Art College training and having been inspired by the skills of his late forebears, who were ecclesiastical woodcarvers.
Tim started showing some of his more extraordinary designs about ten years ago, at a series of Art exhibitions and his consequent nomination for the Turner Prize reinforced what he still feels to be his ‘raison d’etre’ ~ making functional furniture which can also be expressive Art.
Now Tim regularly creates extraordinary, thought-provoking pieces for exhibition but bespoke commissions continue to be at the heart of his work and he has made pieces not only for hundreds of homes, but also for such diverse places as churches, boardrooms and an academy, as well as a castle and a Cathedral!
The Victoria & Albert Museum in London advised Tim a couple of years ago to sign all his pieces and in fact he always has ~ with his acorn ‘makers mark’, accompanied by a unique, indented number.
Sometimes combining woods of contrasting colours, Tim’s designs may incorporate inlays; parquetry; carving and turning as well as other materials, such as glass or metal and working alongside his two craftsmen Tim uses time-honoured methods to make his furniture, including speculative pieces which are sold through the company he founded with his parents’ backing in 1980 ~ Fine Furniture Ltd.
Tim is truly passionate about what he regards as a vocation rather than simply a profession and he relishes the challenge of designing furniture of all kinds, whether it be contemporary or traditional.
